Amorino (NYU, Washington Square)

Okay, first food review in a while.

During my second week here or so I was walking around waiting for class when I saw this gelato shop

amorino (pictures by me!)

lying in wait for NYU students. I went in. The gelato is expensive ($5.25 for the smallest cup,) but it’s natural and they also have ready-made cakes. Here’s some of the flavors they offer:

The mascarpone flavor was interesting. It seems like it’s becoming more popular; I recently had mascarpone-flavored rice pudding at Rice to Riches in Soho. I added a scoop of dark chocolate and a scoop of pistachio. All were good, but overall Amorino’s gelato lacks a kick.

I should add that one of the girls behind the counter was excited when I told her I was taking pictures of the gelato for my blog. I gave her my card

and she said she loves to blog and to read other people’s blogs. This is tremendously cool. It makes me feel connected to a universe of people creating meaning in their own and each other’s lives by sharing their interests with the world. I doubt it’s ever been easier to make friends with people based on your likes and dislikes.

My Rating: 7
Recommended Dish: Mascarpone gelato
Atmosphere/Clientele: NYU
Price Range: Moderate for dessert

Just from being an occasional visitor to New York I can recall three places that serve first-class gelato. Why not review a knockout? I would like to know of a place I’d be unlikely to run across. Then I would feel special.
